As a traveler, it has always been hard to see the cities I live in the same way a tourist does. In 2016, I moved to Girona, Spain. I definitely had to write about this city in Catalonia and tell you the best things to do in Girona. I must admit it: I procrastinated a bit because “I was living there.”

I must say Girona’s appeal lies in its unique mix of attractions. History buffs find a well-preserved old town, while foodies will find delight in the local cuisine. The city also offers a variety of immersive activities that allow visitors to experience its culture firsthand.

Considering that Solo Female Travel in Spain is pretty safe, I decided to go out for a walk with my camera and start to identify the things to do in Girona from my perspective. These were the essential things I came up with after walking around the city.

Bridges in Girona

One of the most beautiful things to see when you visit Girona are the bridges and the houses around the Onyar River. The best thing about it? It is one of the things you can do in Girona for free!

The Eiffel Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel before he built the Eiffel Tower, is a striking red iron bridge connecting the city’s old and new parts. It’s a perfect spot for taking photos with the colorful houses lining the Onyar River in the background.

If you have been to La Rambla in Barcelona, take that idea off your mind. Girona’s Barri Vell (old town) is a lot smaller than Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella, and so is La Rambla. In La Rambla, Girona, you will find a lot of amazing cafés and shops and a lot less crowd than in Barcelona. Having a crepe or coffee around that area is one of the things to do in Girona.

The Cathedral

If you watch Game of Thrones regularly, you might recognize it. Season 6 of the show was filmed in the city. The Cathedral is a must-see when you visit Girona.

The Girona Cathedral’s grand staircase and stunning Gothic architecture are a sight to behold. Climb the steps, and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking city view. Inside, the cathedral houses the Tapestry of Creation, a remarkable piece of Romanesque art.

The best way to see the city from a panoramic view is by taking the wall’s passageway. During the Middle Ages, many groups threatened Girona, so the wall was built.

These walls encircle the old town and provide panoramic views of Girona and the surrounding countryside. The walk is not too strenuous and a great way to soak in the city’s atmosphere.

There are two easy ways you can access the wall: right behind the Cathedral, you can find the stairs, or the other is crossing the street from Plaça Catalunya to Barri Vell. The Museums
