If there’s something everyone knows, is that I love Volleyball and that following it is a motivation to travel. I used to practice it when I was younger and I grew up to follow volleyball worldwide. One of my biggest dreams was to watch a Volleyball match in Italy. In 2015, I was finally able to make it true. In 2017, I went to my second CEV Men’s Champions League Final Four (I went to the Women’s in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2014). Based on this love, I decided to write a guide for volleyball fans willing to visit Italy. In 2018, the FIVB Men’s World Championship will take place in Italy from September 9-30. This is a list of places to visit if you want to explore Italian volleyball in deep or pallavolo, the italian word for Volleyball.

Arrive either in Milan or Rome
If you’re visiting from United States, the best airports to arrive in Italy are Milan-MXP or Rome-FCO. Analyzing prices in Skyscanner, you will find great deals to fly to Italy from many major aiports in the nation. The ones with the best deals to arrive to are these two.
The other reason to arrive to any of these two cities is that it will make easier to visit any major volleyball events or teams around the country. Also, because of the following reason…
Flixbus is your best friend
Most people will tell you to explore Italy traveling by train. I’m a huge fan of Flixbus and I prefer travel in one of their buses rather than trains. Rome and Florence are hubs of most of their major routes. Starting on 5€, you get to explore many cities around the country. I love traveling overnight on these buses. It means that you’ll save a night of paying for a hostel while getting somewhere different.
Flixbus takes you to all of the main Volleyball cities in Italy that you should visit, if your plan is watching a match or a certain team.
Rome does not have a volleyball team, but most of the major volleyball events in Italy take place in that city. In 2017 CEV Men’s Champions League Final Four took place in the PalaLottomattica.
In 2018, the FIVB Men’s World Championship Pool A opening day will be played in one of the iconic Foro Italico. The teams that will be playing on that pool are Argentina, Belgium, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan and Slovenia.

If you have followed me for a few, you know that the Sir Safety Perugia is my favorite team. I have been in Perugia four times already and it is also my favorite place in Italy. I have visited and totally recommend the Perugina Chocolate Factory and the Eurochocolate festival in October. If you are visiting Perugia just for the love of volleyball, you’ll definitely need to go to the PalaEvangelisti and watch Perugia playing. This team was vice champion of Europe in 2017, champions of the Coppa Italia 2018 and the Italian SuperCup 2017.
Perugia is just two hours away from Rome by Flixbus. The Flixbus stop is right next to the PalaEvangelisti.

As I mentioned before, Milan is one of the places you should arrive if you’re visiting from the US. Milan Voley is not a huge contender in the Italian Volleyball League. If you have the chance to visit the city, watching a match should be in your plans.
If you are visiting for the FIVB Men’s World Championship, there are no matches in Milan. Still, it might be a great hub if you’re interested on Pool E of the second round, that will take place in Assago or for the final round that will take place in Torino.

Bologna + Modena
The towns in Emilia Romagna are definitely Italian volleyball capitals. Modena is the team with the most championships in the Italian league. Visiting Modena during volleyball season requires to go to the PalaPanini to watch Modena Volley playing.
During Summer 2018, some matches of the FIVB Men’s Nation League will be played in the PalaPanini. The matches will take place from June 22-24 and will feature the teams from Italy, France, Russia and USA. If you are a volleyball fan, you know these matches are must see.
If you are visiting Bologna for the FIVB Men’s World Championship, Pool F of the second round will be played there in the Land Rover Arena.

If you ask me, Florence is not an Italian volleyball city. They have a Women’s team that maybe, you should watch them playing if Florence is a must in your trip.
During the FIVB Men’s World Championship, Pool A will be played on the Nelson Mandela Forum. If you are in the city, definitely having the chance to see some international volleyball should be an option. The teams that will be playing in that pool are Argentina, Belgium, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan and Slovenia.

Trento is one of the most iconic teams in Italy. If you’re visiting Northern Italy, then definitely getting to see the Trentino Volley playing on the PalaTrento is a must.
During the FIVB Men’s World Championship there are no matches scheduled in this city.

If you look for places to go in Italy, this place in Macerata might not even figure on many lists you’ll see online. This is a coast city on the Adriatic side of Italy. In case you are looking for iconic places to go in the name of volleyball, Civitanova Marche should be on your list.
The EuroSuole Forum in Civitanova is the home court of the Lube Volley club. Lube was the Italian League Scudetto Champion in 2017. This team has a huge tradition in the sport. Definitely, if you get the chance, you should visit their home court.

Which route to take if I want to watch Italian volleyball?
If you want to watch Italian Volleyball, I suggest that once you arrive either in Rome or Milan, you should visit Perugia, Modena, Trento and Civitanova Marche in case you want to see matches of the Italian League. On the map you can find a route that you can do either from Rome or from Milan.
In case you are visiting for the FIVB Men’s World Championship, my suggestion is to think about which teams you want to see. On the map you can find all the courts where the championship will be played at. If you are traveling to follow team USA, you should know that they will be playing in Pool C. Pool C will be playing in the PalaFlorio in Bari. The other teams that will be seeing action in that pool are Australia, Cameroon, Russia, Tunisia and Serbia (Aleksander Atanasijevic’s team!)
The map also contains some options if you are looking for women’s volleyball action. My suggestions for women’s volleyball are visiting Bergamo, Conegliano(Treviso), Busto Arsizio and Novara.
I hope this guide help you to visit Italy while exploring Italian volleyball in deep.
