Eurochocolate Perugia: Exploring It From The Sweetest Side

  >  Cities   >  Eurochocolate Perugia: Exploring It From The Sweetest Side
Eurochocolate is a Chocolate Festival that takes place every year in Perugia, Italy. These are some of the highlights of my visit.

As you might remember, I visited Perugia in 2016 for my birthday and ended up in the Baci Chocolate Factory. This time, I returned to the city to fulfill my life mission: being part of the Eurochocolate Perugia festival. I always knew I needed to go someday. I could finally go, thanks to the wonderful people at Città di Perugia – Turismo.

We want to thank Turismo – Città di Perugia for being wonderful hosts during Eurochocolate Perugia 2017. Thanks to them I spent three nights at Ostello Mario Spagnoli.

Where’s Perugia, and How Do You Get There?

Piazza IV November – Perugia, Italy

Perugia is located in the central Italian region of Umbria and is a place you should include in a two week in Italy itinerary. Being such a central destination makes it easy to access the main international airports in the country. Perugia is two hours away if you arrive in Rome and do any of the unique tours in Rome. The best way to get there, whether from Rome or Florence, is by Flixbus.

If you’re coming from Rome, you must get to Autostazione Tiburtina (right in front of the Tiburtina Train Station) to find the Flixbus to Perugia. From Fiumicino Airport, the easiest way to get to Tiburtina is by train. Take the bus in the Autostazione, and in 2 hours or so, the bus will arrive at Piazzale Umbria Jazz right in Pian di Massiano, one of the main stations of Perugia MiniMetro.

If you’re coming from Florence, you will find the Flixbus stop at the rear of Santa Maria Novella Train Station. From Florence, it will take about 3 hours to get to Perugia.

Where to Stay in Perugia for Eurochocolate?

I had the chance to stay in Ostello Mario Spagnoli. This youth hostel is just walking from Pian di Massiano, where the bus will leave you. In this hostel, you can book either a shared room or a private room. I was lucky enough to have my private room with a bathroom.

The hostel includes breakfast, which is a great relief if you travel on a budget. You will have options such as coffee, brioche, cereals, and juices. Nearby the hostel, you will find plenty of options for dinner and lunch. The hostel is just two minutes away, walking from the Cortonese Mini Metro station. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Pincetto Mini Metro station in the city center, where the Eurochocolate takes place.

You will find several Mini Metro options and public transportation options in Perugia. A single-ticket ride costs 1,50€. If you plan to ride the Mini Metro and/or the city buses more than once daily, I suggest the 24-hour tourist pass, which costs 5,40€.

Eurochocolate Perugia: The Chocolate

Casa del Cioccolato Perugina, Baci - Perugia, Italy - Traveleira.com

Perugia’s history as a city is directly related to Chocolate. The Perugina factory was born right in the city’s center in 1907. Later on, it moved to its new facilities in the industrial zone of San Sisto, where is located now. This factory and the chocolate have played a major role in the city’s economy.

Eurochocolate Perugia started in 1993 as a way to celebrate the chocolate tradition in the city. Over the years, it has become one of the biggest chocolate festivals on the continent. One of their historical highlights was in 2003, when Perugia got the Guinness world record for creating the biggest and heaviest BaciOne. A model of this chocolate can still be found at the Perugina Museum with the Guinness Record.

Eurochocolate Perugia: The Event

The Eurochocolate Perugia festival lasts for 10 days. In 2017, from October 13 until the 22nd, the center of Perugia received booths of different chocolate brands. These chocolate brands came not only from Italy but also from around the world.

During the time the Eurochocolate festival lasts, a series of events and activities are going on in the city. For example, you will find different talks and conferences about chocolate production and distribution. There are cooking shows and chocolate tastings (YAY!) Also, a schedule is only dedicated to kids and families. These tend to run more during the weekends, the busiest days of the festival. Something is going on for everyone’s taste (beyond chocolate!).

Eurochocolate Perugia: Chochocard

The Chococard is your key to enjoying Eurochocolate. As a street festival, Eurochocolate Perugia does not charge an entrance fee. When you acquire a Chococard, you get a series of perks and discounts to make the experience more enjoyable.

This year, some perks included a free Fage yogurt sample, a Lindt truffle, a tea sample from the Eraclea booth, and a chocolate coin from the Chocostore, among many others. There was a total of 10 samples all around the vendors. When it comes to the discounts, there was a 2€ discount if you wanted to visit the Perugina Museum (An experience I recommend!)

Eurochocolate Perugia: What Did I Like the Most?

Eurochocolate 2017 - Perugia, Italy - Traveleira

Maybe this is the hardest question. Let’s begin with the fact that I love the city of Perugia with all my heart. This was my fourth time visiting and I wish I would never have to visit it again (as in stay there forever). The history of chocolate in the city amazes me. Visiting Eurochocolate Perugia was a great way to discover chocolate brands I never heard of. I believe this helps you understand chocolate’s role in other aspects of city life.

I will talk about chocolate itself. My favorite brands of all the ones I got to try were Pernigotti and Eraclea. I also liked the creations from To Ciok, a chocolate factory from Torino. Another thing that I loved was the chocolate Kebab I got to find in Corso Vannucci.

Choosing just one thing is hard for me. I believe that Eurochocolate Perugia is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. If you are a Chocolate lover, this is an amazing opportunity to enjoy that delicious treat while discovering a new city.

Why You Need to Go to Eurochocolate

Eurochocolate 2017 - Perugia, Italy - Traveleira

Personally, I know I will never get tired of Perugia. Like the whole Umbria region, this city is the most underrated location in Italy. It is unfair that Perugia and other Umbrian cities are not visited as much as they should be. I hope spreading the word about Eurochocolate Perugia motivates people to know this region better.

Several earthquakes have hit Umbria in recent times. I believe that tourism and exploring the amazing things they have to offer can be a relief for this lovely region. I hope my experience in this Eurochocolate Perugia inspires you to consider Perugia for your next October vacation. Also, I believe that one of its blessings is that is not far from other places you might look forward to visiting in Italy.
